One of the latest prodigies in a new era for South African sprinting, Retshi Mlenga has stuck up his hand as a potential star of the next generation.
In 2016, in his first season in the youth age group, he clocked impressive personal bests of 10.45 and 20.96 over the 100m and 200m distances.
The following season, he made waves for the first time at international level when he charged to three medals at the World U-18 Championships.
After clocking a 100m career best of 10.37 in the semifinals, he went on to grab the silver medal in the final, crossing the line just 0.04 behind compatriot Tshenolo Lemao.
Four days later, turning out in the final of his favoured event, Mlenga stormed to victory in the 200m dash.
He also joined the SA team as they secured the mixed 4x400m relay bronze medal.
A high school pupil at Prestige College north of Pretoria, the talented young speedster will look to continue the rapid progress he has made in recent years as he makes the transition to the junior age division.
