“I was only 9 years old when I lost my mother. Not having my mom around was something difficult to deal with. The passion I have for athletics keeps me going. Track and field is where I’m happy, it makes me forget everything. Takes the pain away although it never fades. And all the success I attribute to my mother.”

Lindsay Hanekom comes from Blackheath, Cape Town and he has been doing athletics since primary school. He is based now in Pretoria and he studies Sport Science at the University.

He always did long distance running and cross-country then the switch came in high school. He started doing 400m and 110mh and with his endurance and technique he chose the 400mh. He didn’t take athletics that seriously in the early ages, but in 2011 he ran his first 400mh race at local high school championships, came 7th overall in a time of 1:03s.

During the same year he got WPA school silver medal 400mh. In the Western Cape school Championships he was ranked 4th in the 400mh.

In 2012 he competed at his first South African Juniors Championships in Germiston and crossed the finish line in third place with a life time best of 52.12 sec.  He won also the silver medal in the WPA junior and senior championships.

“I have a favourite biblical quote Luke 18:27 that says “The things that seem impossible by men is possible by God”…chase your dream, believe in your God given ability, always pray through good and bad times”.

In 2013 at the WPA U23 Championships he won the silver medal in the 400mH and in the South African Junior U23 Championships he came 4th. He then took part in the 4x400m relay at the SA senior Championships, coming back with a bronze medal.

In 2014 he won the title in the WPA U23 Championships in both 400m and 400m hurdles and in the WPA Senior Championships he won the silver in the 400mH and bronze in the 400m.

At the SA junior U23 Championships he claimed the bronze medal in 400mH and at the Senior competition he came 5th.

In 2015 he won the SA U23 title in 400mH in Bloemfontein and he came 4th at the SA Senior Championships in Stellenbosch.

At the USSA meeting he won the gold medal in 400m hurdles clocking a new personal best 50 sec.

Selected for the World Student Games in Gwangju – Korea he came third in the semi-finals with 50.36 sec.
